Gratitude vs. Appreciation

This principle doesn't quite need a full fledged guide. It is a given that expressing gratitude is the ultimate cheat code for life, and the shortest of short cuts for raising your overall vibe. But what you may not know is that you can take things a step deeper.

You can also choose to express appreciation.

Exploring the Difference

So what's the difference? And what does this mean for your gratitude practice? I'm glad you asked. In the simplest of statements, gratitude and appreciate evoke a different emotional response. When you say "I am grateful my job" vs "I appreciate my job" -- you should feel a slight difference, emotionally, as a result of the statements.

Let's say for instance you don't like your job, but you are trying to raise your vibes about it and you write a series of gratitude statements, similar to this:

  1. I am grateful for my job

  2. I am grateful for a consistent paycheck

  3. I am grateful for my kind and supportive coworkers

  4. I am grateful to have the tools I need to complete my job

  5. I am grateful to have a work schedule that allows me get rest daily

Now, read each statement out loud and take a moment between each, and after saying all five, to see how you feel. Make note of it. Next, you re going to read the same set of statements, but expressing appreciation instead.

  1. I appreciate my job

  2. I appreciate receiving a consistent paycheck

  3. I appreciate my coworkers kindness and support

  4. I appreciate having the tools I need to complete my job

  5. I appreciate having a work schedule that allows me get rest daily

Once again, read each statement out loud and take a moment between each, and after saying all five, to see how you feel. Again, make a note of it. Appreciate tends to strike a "deeper chord" within us. That's because appreciation is an internal reflection process.

Breaking Down the Differences

While expressing both gratitude and appreciation are beneficial to your life, and raising of overall vibes. It's worth nothing what makes the two different and how it can impact your choice in your daily practice.

  1. Gratitude is the base from which appreciation grows and flourishes…if we’re paying attention. That is, we can be grateful for something in our lives without really appreciating it. When we truly have appreciation, we bring to mind what about someone, or something makes us feel.

  2. Another is that very subtly, gratitude can imply that you are lowly and so grateful for the good that has come to you. It implies that you are undeserving in some way and that you are almost indebted to something or someone for all the good in your life.

There is a lingering feeling of the fear that surrounded that struggle and it’s this lingering fear that can be the difference between a high vibrational emotion like gratitude, and an even higher vibrational emotion like appreciation.

The definition of gratitude is the quality of being thankful. It’s very subtle, but the quality of being thankful is one of looking at a struggle you’ve overcome. Wikipedia

Appreciation is more about a calling to be more of who you are. There is no lack involved there is simply an in the moment experience of feeling thankful for where you are right here right now. Returning to our job example, being appreciative

The definition of appreciation is the recognition and enjoyment of the good qualities of someone or something. In other words, to increase the value of something by your focus on the good qualities of that person or thing. Wikipedia
